Week 1 Introduction

Hey guys! My name is Amber and I’m a senior at OU graduating in May! I took the Mythology and Folklore class a few semesters ago and I really loved it so I decided to take this class this semester. I’m taking a lot of classes this semester so that I’ll be able to graduate on time: capstone practicum class, ecology and environment, industrial psychology, physiological psychology, and this class - sixteen hours total. I’m also volunteering for the first time at a place in Oklahoma City called Calm Waters, which is a place where families with children can go to get grief support and divorce support groups. I’m going to be a grief support group facilitator for small children which is going to be awesome, I’m so excited!

Image Information: Calm Waters Flier from their website.

I have a roommate named Bria who took this course last semester and is in the Myth and Folklore class this semester and a dog named Lily (who was in the picture in my favorite places post). Let’s see, what else is interesting about me: I had to start school on my birthday (yesterday) this semester, which sucked because that hasn’t happened since I came to college. I also work at my old high school twenty one hours a week as a receptionist so I stay pretty busy.

Right now, when I have time, I’m reading Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor, which is absolutely amazing. I also like to binge watch series on netflix like Friends and Bones, which are both excellent shows.

I’m a Psychology major and I hope to become a counselor someday, after attending grad school of course, which is why I’m volunteering at Calm Waters because I think it will be a great experience for a future counselor. I plan to move to Kansas when I get out of grad school to live with my grandmother and work as a counselor in town but also work on her horse ranch because I absolutely love horses and all other kinds of animals. It’s going to be so great, just like this semester.

  1. Hi Amber! Congrats on graduation this May! It must be so exciting! I also took the Mythology class last semester, and had to take this one as well. It's great that you are volunteering and working so much while still going to school. It sounds like you are extremely busy! Since you like to watch Netflix, you should totally binge watch "Dexter". It is kind of old, but still an amazing show.

  2. Hi Amber! First of all, congratulations on almost being done! What a great feeling you must be having being so close to the finish line! Wow, that is really amazing that you volunteer at Calm Waters. Even though we do not know each other, that really tells me a lot about your character. 21 hours a week plus 16 hours of school?! You are bionic! I’m super excited Friends is on Netflix now. I love that show. I'm currently watching Sons of Anarchy and it's amazing! Best of luck this semester, Amber!

  3. Hi Amber! It sounds like we have a lot in common! I am a biochemistry major, however I recently made the decision to double-major in psychology as well. I am really excited about it. I find psychology fascinating, and possibly the most easily applied science to life. I am sure that psychology fascinates you just as much :) It is awesome that you volunteer! It sounds like that kind of work would be super rewarding, and I do not know if I could do it. I volunteer as well, for an after school initiative for at-risk children. It is pretty rewarding as well. Congratulations on being almost done and I wish you the best of luck with your career!

  4. It's so nice to get to meet people a second time around like this, Amber - and the fact that you and Bria are connected is so cool. Sometimes I am aware of people being roommates or whatever, but other times it catches me totally by surprise. And how great that you are working at Calm Waters. I hope you can find some good stories in this class that you can use there. The characters and stories of the epics have played a really sustaining role in India and south Asia for literally thousands of years, as have the Buddhist tradition. I'm looking forward to seeing which stories grab your attention and what you will do with them this semester!!! :-)

  5. Hey Amber! Congratulations on graduating in May, and then moving on to grad school. I am also a Psychology major here, but I am not attending grad school at this moment in time. I think it is great that you volunteer at Calm Waters. I like to hear about all the different places that people find to volunteer, because I think it is important that we give back to our community. I have never heard of that organization so I will look it up and learn some more about it, it sounds very interesting. On another note, I am a huge fan of animals also, and would love to have an opportunity to work on a horse ranch… enjoy it! It was nice to meet you, and I hope you have a great semester!

Binge watching Netflix is totally acceptable and wonderful way to spend time! :)

  6. Hi Amber,
I wanted to take the Mythology and Folklore class but it was closed so I enrolled in this class and I am very pleased so far. I also have to volunteer for my Capstone class this semester and I decided to volunteer for the Bella Foundation. I am really excited to volunteer for the Bella Foundation because I am going to be helping with animal adoptions throughout the semester. Good luck with all of your classes this semester and graduating in May!

  7. Hi Amber! Congrats on graduating in May--I am also graduating this spring, and I am so excited and nervous for what the future holds! But I hope you are enjoying working at Calm Waters--that sounds like a great experience for you, especially with your future goals in mind. I'm in the Mythology & Folklore class this semester as well as this Indian Epics course and I love them both. It does sound like you have a busy semester, though, so I hope it is going well. Also, Friends is absolutely fantastic. I never get tired of watching it (which is why I have all 10 seasons on DVD) haha.

  8. Amber,

I also have a dog named Lilly! She is a yellow lab, and I'm obsessed with her. I actually just finished the last season of Friends this week! I had never watched the entire thing from start to finish. It seems like you have a full plate this semester! That is awesome that you are volunteering somewhere that you enjoy and want to pursue! Good luck with everything!

  9. Hi Amber!

Congratulations on making it to the last semester of college. I am also a senior and this is my last semester, woohoo! Calm Water sounds like such a good experience for what you're wanting to do in the future. Psychology sounds like such a fun major. I wish you good luck with your future goals and hope you have a good last semester of your undergrad. :)

  10. Hi Amber,

I think it’s awesome that you do so much! Psychology was my back-up plan to engineering in case the waters got too rough for me (they are certainly wavy, but it hasn’t tipped the boat yet). So, I think its really cool that your are studying psychology. I am curious where you plan to live in Kansas. Almost all of my extended family lives in Topeka, Independence, and Wichita areas, so I am pretty familiar with the state. It’s a great spot to have a ranch and some horses!

Keep up the hard work! Can’t wait to blog with you more.

  11. Amber,

Serving as a group facilitator at Calm Waters sounds like a great experience! Did that position require a great deal of training? Also, where would you like/are you going to graduate school at? What exactly would you be doing at your grandmother’s horse ranch? It sounds like a blast! I apologize for asking so many questions, but I couldn’t help myself.

  12. Hey Amber, I know you're graduating in May (I am too), but there is an awesome class here at OU called Experiencing Art Therapy which discusses that type of counseling you are wanting to do! I very much hope that you are able to be a counselor. I have a feeling that you would be very good at the job! Good luck!

  13. Amber, just like you I have a loaded schedule this semester in order to graduate. I am in 18 hours and it is quite a task to keep up to date with all of these classes all the time. I have no idea how you do that, work , and volunteer throughout the week. That is very impressive. Anyways, good luck with your career path and moving to Kansas. Sounds like you have it all figured out.

  15. Hello Amber. You are almost finished with school. Congratulations! I am sure working with children and helping them with grief will be very rewarding. I would not want to start school on my birthday. That sounds horrible. I also like to binge watch Netflix in my free time. I finished House of Cards and now I just started watching Daredevil. Well good luck with the rest of your semester.
